Reformers and heaters are heart of refineries and petrochemical plants which employ radiant and convective heat recovery from the flue gases of fired fuels to maximize fuel efficiency.
A convection heater is a heater, which operates by air convection currents circulating through the body and across its heating element. This heats up the air, causing it to increase in volume and so become buoyant and rise.
The flue gases from the radiant section can be also pulled across horizontal tubular part of the convection section by an induced draft fan. The main part of such kind of a convection module is bare or finned pipe rows assembled in cast tube supports. Generally those coils in hotter flue gas service (above 1500-1600 Deg F) are constructed of bare tubes. When a large duty has to be accomplished, some finned tubes are used in the convection coil design, sometimes in combination with bare tubes in the hottest flue gases.
